Sustainability
We're working on it . . . . .

Re-wilding
Our three acres have been in the process of rewilding for over twenty years. Many indigenous trees and grasses have self-seeded and flourished, attracting a variety of birds.
Natural Boundaries
Much of the property is contained by natural hedges consisting of a mix of thorns and succulents that allow small mammals to pass through and find refuge in our island of bush.
Growing Organically
The herbs and salads we serve are grown in our kitchen garden and we are developing the vegetable garden which currently produces lettuce, fennel, rhubarb, peppers and leaks. Home grown, bananas, papaya and passion fruit are enjoyed by our guests when in season.
Purchasing Locally
We purchase most our produce and groceries in Karatu. Our butter and cheeses are made by local artizans and of course the coffee is Tanzanian grown.
Sharing Resources
Our grass grows long and thick, we share it with our staff who take it home for their cattle as well as with the neighbouring Maasi Girls Rescue Center farm.
Our neighbouring lodge, Mama Dunia, welcomes our guests to use their infinity pool. It's a great place for a sundowner with a wonderful veiw of Mount Oldeani.
Reducing Single-Use Plastic
We provide purified drinking water, guests can refill their reuseable water bottles at the house. Our picnic lunches and breakfast baskets contain no single-use plastic. We love it when guests arrive with hampers and reuseable picnic equipment and containers that we replenish for their next outing.
Recycling
We collect the plastic and other waste outside the perimiters of our property. The plastic is taken to Green Venture in Arusha to be sorted and upcycled to construction materials. Non-returnable glass is taken to Sanaa where it is melted down to create blown glassware.
Rain Water Collection
Our roofs collect rain water which is stored in a 20,000 litre underground tank. We use this water for the gardens and seedlings that need it in the dry season.
